Saltmarsh walk RSPB reserve
G and I went on a lovely 13.5k walk from Tollesbury to Salcot-cum-virley and back along the sea wall past the RSPB nature reserve. This section of the Saltmarsh featured in the scene in the BBC TV adaption of Great Expectations staring Ray Winstone. Rain kept us cool and we kept going without pausing to rest 'till we reached the church in Salcot. G has a plan to walk the entire Saltmarsh route over the next few weeks. It will be quite a challenge and this was the first step. Whilst nearing the RSPB there was a cacophony of bird calls - delightful. Interesting to notice how much difference it makes to have a site managed for the benefit of wildlife. We spotted several birds including avocet, curlew, common turn taking fish to their nests and finally a marsh harrier; an exciting spectacle. We were quite tired after the long walk, so returned home for tea and a well deserved rest. .
