Out and About

Emma

It was actually dry and sunny this morning. I went out to pull Himalayan balsam but only found three plants- that's actually a big success.

Driving rain all afternoon so it's time to Blip this last months reading matter,. Only 5 books this month because I've had to wrestle with Jane Austen's  Emma.  Coincidently chosen by my local book group at the same time as the excellent series Jane  Austen, the Rise of a Genius on BBC 2.   Emma is not the easy read of  Pride and Prejudice.  There's a lot of narrative in the upper middle class English of 1815 Hampshire. My goodness were they long winded and formal. Cumbria  libraries' guidelines for book clubs are that we should read a classic at least once a year . Emma is not a likeable character but she has ticked the box with the library.

Believing the Lie is an Inspector  Lynley book. I've never read one before or watched it on TV. I hadn't realised Elizabeth George was American. The book is set in Cumbria so I thought it might be interesting but its not. I found it very irritating.  For example, the characters go out  into  the  fells and end up wild camping on Scout Scar.  Local Blippers might agree that this is quite ridiculous.
