Souvenirs
Home after a long journey back from Moffat (via Dumfries where I could have stayed longer, and then the Thomas Carlyle birthplace house).
As it’s Tiny Tuesday, my two souvenirs from my Western Isles trip seem appropriate. A new key ring, of polished lewisian gneiss (one of the most ancient rocks in the UK, 2.5 billion years old at least). And a book to read, Adam Nicholson’s “Sea Room”. At the age of 21 he inherited the Shiants, three small islands I visited last Tuesday, and the book is all about them (he has passed the islands onto his son now). I read his book “The Seabirds Cry” a few years ago, and it was tremendous, so I think this will be a good read.
