The Stromness Selkies

It’s hard to get a photo of all the Stromness Singing Selkies together  and this photo only represents some of them but is the biggest number to date of all swimming at the same time. There are others who swam earlier today and some who for whatever reason didn’t swim at all. The conditions were perfect, warmth, sunshine and a calm sea.

I had an email this morning telling me the Susie Dent book I had wanted from the Library in Kirkwall was now available and so, knowing that the Island Games start tomorrow with road closures and  buses doing strange things, I got the 10am bus through to Kirkwall, collected the book and was back home by 11:30. You can’t judge a book by its cover so I hope I’m wrong in saying it doesn’t look like one you can’t put down. I have to read it for my Book Group meeting in Edinburgh in August.

The sun in Kirkwall failed to travel to Stromness where clouds had gathered as I made my way to lunch with SelkieWendyF. It was so hot and oppressive as I climbed up from the street even without the sunshine that I’m glad I’m not living further south.

I tried a stint of reading the new book in the garden this  afternoon but it kept slipping out of my hands as I nodded off.  That’s not a good omen. I gave up eventually and retired to have a siesta-ette in the house- standards are on a downward slide., but I have to be on the ball because SelkieLibby is coming this evening to waken me up and  make me laugh.
