2025 Friday — Mitzi’s Final Days

Every Friday afternoon we gather our things to head north to the community of Cambria so I can have a piano lesson. We put the pups in their harnesses and attach their leashes. Today I almost suggested that we leave the two pups, Chloe & Mitzi, home while we were gone because Mitzi was sleeping deeply; we think Mitzi is in her final days on earth.

Mitzi is 16 1/2; she is completely deaf and we think her right eye has gone blind. Over the past year she has gradually gotten thinner, and she is tired. She sleeps for hours. She has stopped eating except for a small nibble. When we stopped at the park today we mostly wanted to see the new house across the street that is being constructed. But little Chloe wanted to get out of the car and walk in the park, so she was barking and throwing a fit, and then Mitzi rallied too and wanted to get out of the car. We were both surprised. She walked without wobbling (her hind legs are not working very well). I think the little excursion of walking thru the park was too much for her. She has slept most of the evening.

This is breaking our hearts. We aren’t ready to let her go, but we’ll never be ready. Her mate, Max, passed away in March of 2020. He had liver disease and both his eyes had gone blind. Letting him go was extremely hard and I think we waited longer than we should have. We just do not know when is the right time to take a pet to the veterinarian for euthanasia?

The next couple of days are going to be tender, not to mention extremely tough.

Good night from Cayucos,
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
and Chloe & Mitzi too!
