Haar at the beach
So today didn't end up at all how we planned it. I was supposed to be heading to York for Messerfest, but with one thing and another that didn't work out. P was supposed to be heading north to Aberdeen for (similar-sounding, but very different) Metalfest. I decided to go with him and we got a bit of a last minute night in a premier inn.
I haven't been to Aberdeen since visiting briefing on a University tour over twenty years ago - eep. We took an easy drive up, stopping off for lunch at the excellent Castleton Farm shop which is a huge fruit farm - the blueberry chutney was delicious as was the salad with berries form the farm. Then on to Aberdeen, I had a pootle round the shops failing to spend some early birthday money before meeting back up with P shortly who decided it was too much of a nice day to spend it in a tunnel.
After checking in, we had a nosy round the maritime museum, enjoyed the model oil platform and got spooked out by the diving suits, then we headed off to the promenade to cehck out the street food trucks for dinner. We just missed out on pizzas, but got very tasty burritos instead. Whilst eating, we watched the Shetland ferry dissapear off into the harr, before I noticed some big splashes in the water and we spent the next twenty minutes trying to figure out if it were dolphins or whales. A friendly group with binoculars clarified it was dolphins and that they're pretty common to spot, they even leant us the binoculars breifly so we could have a proper look. Pretty special.
After food and solphins, P enjoyed some unusual beer combinations at the Fierce bar and then we went to see Superman on a whim, which was...odd. I'm still not sure who the target audience was, but it was a lot. Not the day either of us expected, but we had a good one!
Blip is of the Aberdeen beach, and you can spot the Haar coming in just at the northern point.
