Belfast, fast
In Belfast on a "me" day (flexi leave to be used before Friday).
Arrived at noon, left at 7pm. I have walked loads. I mean LOADS. Coming out of Grand Central, I headed for a tower block that looked interesting. A sign of a lived in area. Found out later that it's on the Falls Road. So I walked a lot of west Belfast. From the Falls Rd to Shankill Rd and everywhere in between. I mean everywhere.
West Belfast ain't exactly subtle. You're reminded at all times of which community you're walking through. It is said that in Belfast one isn't an atheist. One is a Catholic atheist or a Protestant atheist. I can well believe that.
You could tell that it wouldn't take much to see it all blow up again in a second.
Twice I was stopped by semi-agressive types asking me what I was taking photos of. When they heard the French accent they immediately changed attitude, were almost friendly. Mostly reassured that I wasn't playing for the "other" side.
It was an education.
I am knackered but happy to have finally made the trip.
It only took 32 years...
