Maurice Turning Hay
A beautiful sunny morning first thing, then clouded over but still about 20⁰c. A beautiful sunny afternoon and evening, warm winds about 25⁰c.
A morning working with James in the mini essykert. We were in Bressay this morning, black bag waste. On my own this afternoon, oil waste and various small jobs. Washing out after work, and some chores I'd been putting off. Working in the shop this evening, super busy with the lovely night. Walkies, then feet up for the night. Good to see tourists out in shorts and t-shirts, must be warm here, even a man sunbathing outside his camper in Scalloway.
Make hay when the sun shines, as they say, not a truer word for the crofters right now. Most use silage bales these days, but you occasionally see proper hay being worked. Hay was always my favourite job on the croft when I was a bairn. We would turn it with old wooden rakes, usually with granny Lorna helping. An easier method is using the old haybob, like Maurice (Anderson) has here, much quicker. A quick chat with Maurice, then on my way again. Note the more traditional lifestyle, with the new cruise ship and wind turbines in the distance. Taken at Kirkabister, Bressay.
