A sad sight
Pubs are closing weekly but this one, the Harrow at Compton near Godalming in Surrey, has been closed as an inn since 2015. It was then run as a Thai restaurant which closed in 2019, and was sold to developers in 2022. And 6 years after the doors were closed it stands still empty, boarded up, unloved. The developers have put in planning applications for residential development which have been turned down, allowed on appeal and then resubmitted for an increase in residential units. The oak-beamed pub was built in 1815 as a brewhouse and inn. It must have witnessed so much in its 200 years. Now it is just a witness to the sad decline of pubs, even those as historic as The Harrow at Compton.
