Nosey
I only turned my back on a lovely sunny awakening for what seemed no time at all before hearing the fog horn of the Hamnavoe ferry booming out through a thick haar as it inched and boomed its way round the Ness. By the time I was ready to meet the Street, the haar had gone and the sun was set to full on.
I sat in its unrelenting glare to have coffee at Flori’s thinking it was quite bizarre that I was craving shade when it’s usually the other way round
As I walked down the street and round the harbour there seemed no respite from the heat and sun until I retreated into the library but not to the room with the view, but the downstairs children’s area where there was a chair in a corner out of the sun where I could read the ‘Ghost Cat’ set in the Edinburgh of my childhood.
Cooled down, I made my way home poking my nose down a close I’d never poked my nose down before. I saw the community rowing boat looking very like the one I see at Porty out on the waves early in the morning.
Our swim was at 3pm to catch the high tide and it was just glorious. We were in the water far longer than usual even though jellyfish fish had been spotted. SelkieSarah is encouraged to go ahead of us in the water because she seems to be our local jellie whisperer who can locate them, point them out to us and put the fear of dread in them so that they disperse.
There has to be a downside to warmer water and that is jellyfish.
As I see the Ferry leaving for the Mainland at 4:30, the wind has increased a bit and the sunshine is hazy. The Island Games have had some spectacular weather - I bet none of the overseas competitors were expecting to have these continental temperatures.
SelkieLibby is coming tonight when we will sit like 2 old wifies with our crochet, chat and laugh while TLMichael takes tours round Skara Brae. I wonder if back in its hey day the women of SK ever got together while the men went out fishing. I bet they never made anything as useless as Granny Squares.
