Tug of War

Today's the day ...................... for 'Scottish Night'

The nice thing about having Tessa and Josie here on Thursdays/Fridays through the school holidays, is that Thursday evening is Kirkcudbright Scottish Night.

It all takes place in the Harbour Square Car Park in the middle of town from 7.00pm - 8.30pm.  It's a celebration of all things Scottish - Pipe Band, highland dancing, country dancing, music etc - and it has become an unmissable event for locals and tourists alike.  The girls absolutely love it, despite the fact that they've been dozens of times - and the format never changes.

There's no question though, what the highlight is for them both - it's the Tug of War.   This takes place between a dozen or so unsuspecting (male) visitors - and the huge number of local children who always turn up (see extra).  The strange but undeniable fact is that, it's always the children who win!

Will and I have watched it many times - and we can't fathom whether there's any trickery involved.  The children do always win - twice, because they change ends.  And the men always look puzzled but resigned that they haven't won.

It's one of life's great mysteries ......................?!
