We went for a longer walk today, 15 kilometres (just under 20,000 steps) from Unterstmatt to the little lake Mummelsee, via Hornisgrinde, the highest point in the Northern Black Forest, and back.

It was a beautiful hike, though very green forest and across raised bogs (see extra) on the ridges. The views from the top of Hornisgrinde are quite spectacular - over the Black Forest hills (main blip), the Rhine valley to the West, and the Swabian Jura to the East - but today’s hazy weather didn’t allow us to see all the way to the Alps.

We stopped for lunch at Hotel Mummelsee (top right in the extra collage). But the afternoon turned increasingly hot and humid, with a forecast for thunderstorms, so we didn’t stay long and went back.
