Diary of an Edinburgher

Baltic Cruise Day 2

They found my walking stick rubber endy bit!

A very nice breakfast on my birthday morning. The fruit is terrific, not just your assorted melons, but guavas and figs and lychees too.

Then we were off, in yesterday’s clothes, on a bus tour of the wee Danish island of Bornholm. Very pretty. First to a wee brewery, where we were greeted by the sight of dozens of glasses of different beers, three for each person. After that we had a wander round the village, looked in at glass blowing and the harbour, and came back. We were regaled the whole trip of tales of life on the island.

Back in time for lunch. Sushi for me, salad and salmon coulibiac for JR. They always have a big hot pudding dish (I’m hanging out for rice pudding) but today it was cardamom and pear pudding. It was fabulous. So fabulous, that JR, on trying a wee bit of mine, immediately went and got her own serving. And she’s not a pudding person.

Our lovely butler brought us some pre-dinner caviar to our balcony. We’ve never tried it before, but our posher cruising friends rave about it!’ It was very nice, but I don’t know what the fuss is about.

Off for a wonderful fillet steak meal, then up to our favourite cafe for chocs and coffee, where we met a couple of older American ladies. JR noticed their jewellery, but I didn’t. Obviously husbands had high flying jobs, but are long gone, and they’re spending the money. One had three typed pages of cruises she’d been on.

What a memorable birthday.

PS Reception is quietly hopeful our luggage will turn up in Gdansk tomorrow…
