Bumbling Around
Not entirely unexpected to find a bee on some bee balm. Named in part because bees are attracted to it, but also because, historically, the leaves were used to treat bee stings.
Officially named Monarda, for the Spanish botanist Nicolás Monardes, who wrote a book in 1574 describing plants of the New World.
A two-spotted bumble bee, bombus bimaculatus, one of 20 bumble bees and approximately 400 wild species of bees in the state.
