Austfonna Ice Cap

We’ve headed to the eastern side of Svalbard which is colder, and has the largest ice cap in Europe.

Depending on the statistics there are others in contention but this, the Austfonna Ice Cap more or less runs the entire eastern coast of Nordauslandet.

In the morning we sailed as close as we could to the small island of Kvytoya. We were on deck early, and some of the expedition team saw as many as 6 or 7 polar bears. They were just dots in the distance, even with binoculars. I saw lots of blobs both with my camera and my binoculars but wasn’t sure I’d seen a bear.

I examined my photos later and saw that one of my blobs had legs. The experts assured me it’s a polar bear. (Extra) it’s in the bottom right corner if you want to check it out.

I was by the side, though, when a nosey walrus nearly got run over by our ship, the Fram.

This is the life.

I’ve just added a waterfall…..on the ice cap…photo taken at nearly ten o’clock…..!!!
