Pieve di Spaltenna

The baptismal church of Spaltenna, near Gaiole.

The place Spaltenna was first mentioned in 1030 in the archives of the local monastery (the same one that used to own my house). The church there became the baptismal church for the area in 1153. The building is Romanesque with a semi-circular apse. When the town of Gaiole developed in the valley, a new church was built closer to the population, and Spaltenna became a local church again.

Today it's part of a prestigious hotel that occupies the castle and cloisters next door. The church is still consecrated. It has a few local services but is mainly used for weddings at the hotel. What a glorious place to get married!
