Germans On Tour

A wee reminder of the visiting German football fans who were in Edinburgh at the start of the month for a friendly match against Hibs. The game to mark Hibs’ 150th anniversary was against Rot-Weiss Essen who Hibs had played in the first round of the first round of the inaugural European Cup in 1955. Although Rot-Weiss now play in the third tier of German football Essen is a city of over half a million people and their average attendance is just under 17000, so it wasn’t entirely surprising that they brought a couple of thousand fans for a friendly match. Perhaps they were inspired by the very positive experience of Scottish fans in Germany for the Euros last summer. Obviously some Rot-Weiss fans visited Porty while they were in Edinburgh and left another football sticker to add to my collection on blip.
