Y Cwis Mawr
FRIDAY
The day started with a trip up to the nearby market town of Denbigh with the car packed with donations for the local charity shops.
After a quick lunch back home, we headed to Prestatyn. I walked from the town centre down to the beach in the sunshine — around a mile each way. The place was buzzing: the beach and the cafes were busy and the crazy golf was in full swing. People were out in the sea. I forced myself to have coffee and an ice cream.
This evening brought an unexpected turn. We went to a quiz night at Rhuddlan Community Centre. Prue was already heading there with her team of Welsh learners — her friends Alison, Christina and Linda — while I wasn’t planning to go at all (as I can’t speak a word of Welsh beyond deciphering road signs), but I was press-ganged into joining one of the two Bowling Club teams.
The quiz, Y Cwis Mawr, was aimed at Welsh speakers of all levels and was hosted by Dylan Jones from BBC Radio Cymru. Fortunately for me, all the questions were translated into English.
The hall was full, with around a dozen teams taking part. People had brought their own food, wine, and beer to supplement the sandwiches and snacks on offer.
As for the quiz results…... the Bowling Club teams weren’t exactly threatening the leaderboard. But Prue’s team only went and won it picking up tickets to the quiz finals at next weekend’s Eisteddfod in Wrexham.
A good day overall.
