SUNDAY
Thank you for the stars and hearts on yesterday's bike blip.
Today, I decided to take a trip to Bodrhyddan Hall, which is only a few miles down the road, to check out the North Wales Classic Car and Bike Show. I had high expectations of a nice afternoon surrounded by classic vehicles, in a historic setting, but sadly, it didn’t live up to the hype.
The entry fee was £25 for the two of us. Save for a handful, the vehicles on display were underwhelming, there were only a few stalls, and the food offerings didn’t inspire much excitement either. Furthermore, we couldn't explore the gardens of the historic house as they were closed.
I’ve seen better classics drive through my village this week, including a stunning Le Mans C-type Jaguar. Among the few cars that did catch my eye was a 1971 Hillman Imp and a Renault people carrier which featured on Top Gear . But Unfortunately, even the Imp didn’t live up to expectations - It had a lot of filler around the wheel arches, the wrong engine cover and the owner said he knew next to nothing about the car’s specification which made for a pretty uninspiring conversation.
I’m not a Rolls-Royce fan, but the car in the blip was attracting a fair bit of attention. That said, something about it doesn't quite add up. According to DVLA records, it was registered in 1995 and has just 26,000 miles on the clock so it might have a similar provenance to Lady Penelope’s motor.
For comparison, the classic car show at Caerwys a couple of weeks back was far superior in every way. The range and condition of vehicles were better, the atmosphere more genuine, and the entry was just £5.
With the Bodrhyddan show failing to impress, we decided to salvage the afternoon with a 5 km walk along the old railway track from Dyserth to Prestatyn. It turned out to be a lovely route and we stopped off for a nice lunch at Y-Shed café.
And after almost four years of having one, I finally used my bus pass for the very first time! Caught the bus back to the car.
Not the day I was hoping for, but we made the best of it and I won’t be in a rush to return to the Bodrhyddan Classic Car and Bike Show next year.
