Pickle or Chutney??
We get through lot of chutney in our house so you can imagine my dismay when I discovered we’d just finished the last jar of my rhubarb and date chutney. I’ve made a load more as you can see here but, you will be asking, why the Branston?
When MrP went off to replenish the empty larder, I asked him to buy a jar of Branston to keep us going until my chutney has matured - at least a month!
He comes back and says- “this Branston says it’s a Pickle- what is the difference between chutney and pickle?”
Good question. I like pickled cucumbers and piccalilli. I'm not a fan of pickled onions or pickled red cabbage but the Branston - it says on the jar - The Original Pickle.
I think chutney is more like jam with the fruit and/or veg cooked in vinegar and sugar so it's not as tart as a pickle. My chutney that you can see here, has 400g of sugar to 300ml of vinegar. So, is Branston a chutney or a pickle? It’s quite sweet, I think it's chutney despite what it says on the jar. What do you think?
