Painted by sheep
I have been following the work of Andy Goldsworthy for a long time. I think it goes back to the 1990s when he was working on sheepfolds in Cumbria. Since then, I have always been interested in what he was doing. I have collected his books, found all his sheepfolds and pinfolds, followed him on the drove road. We even stopped off once, on our way south, at a town in France where he had been working.
So I was thrilled to find he was creating a very special retrospective exhibition in the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. A few days ago I watched online an event where he talked about the setting up of this huge exhibition. I booked us in.
Today we went to Edinburgh by train from Appleby and went to the exhibition. It is surprising, fascinating - quite wonderful. I am not going to say much about it now as it’s been a long day. Just to share a couple of things -
- My blip is a Sheep Painting - canvas nailed down in a field, a mineral block placed in the centre. The sheep ‘painted’ with muddy feet as they ate.
- Extra - Oak Passage - as you approach it, it seems to be an impenetrable mass of branches then you realise there is a way through via the oak floor of the building.
A great day - pleasant train journeys, several hours in the exhibition, a delicious Italian meal eaten outside and a long while sitting in the sunny gardens reading our books.
Extra - our two celebrating a wedding anniversary by cycling along the coast near Penzance.
