Like a bird on a wire

It’s astounding how quickly you pass into obsolescence as a parent. One day, the plum of your loins can’t wipe his nose without asking your advice, the next he can’t call as he is off on a walking tour of a city some 4,000 km away. Quite amazing, really. Oh well.

Life here got back to normal after the excitement of the weekend. We are in the midst of a “multi-day heat event”, which has the temperatures going up to 40° plus. I feel sorry for the binmen, who have to do their routes regardless. Hauling stuff to the trucks, lifting it up and dumping it in this heat cannot be any fun. I hung some laundry out yesterday and came in drenched from the effort. Mind you, I suppose that might say more about me…

Did a good chunk of translation in the morning, then took delivery of a parcel of goodies from the UK. Because of the ridiculous cost of postage, I gather stuff I order at a friend’s house and then get it sent over every 3-4 months or so. Haven’t opened it yet – and have pretty much forgotten what will be inside it – so it is like having an extra Christmas in July.

Sat out in the garden pretending it wasn’t too hot, and for some reason got to thinking about Leonard Cohen.
