1936: Jesse Owens wins long jump and respect in Germany
Quote Of The Day
"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort."
(Jesse Owens)
Another hot day forecast so I'll probably stay within reach of an air conditioner and enjoy my current read for most of the day. It's very good. I'm just under half way through and I already feel like I will be seeking out the sequels, Insurgent, Allegiant and Four. Apparently some of these were made into films, but the reviews are not that hot.
I like the concept of a future society in which, as a means to end the chaos and destruction caused by human emotions, society is divided into five factions centred around positive human values - Candor for the honest, Dauntless for the brave, Erudite for the intelligent, Abnegation for the selfless and Amity for the peaceful. At the age of sixteen, everyone must take a test to determine which faction they are best suited to. Of course, most people are best suited to the faction which they have spent the first sixteen years of their life being raised in, but at the Choosing Ceremony, the sixteen year olds have the opportunity to choose which faction they will be assigned to.
SPOILER ALERT.
The hero of the book, Beatrice Prior, rejects her life in Abnegation and chooses to live in Dauntless. Now she has to pass the exacting - and often brutally violent - initiation tests. If she fails, she could spend the rest of her life living among the factionless - a life without meaning or purpose.
I am sure that anyone who reads this book will, like me, find themselves wondering, "Which faction would I be best suited to, and would I choose that faction or would I choose a different faction?" I expect I would be best suited to Amity but I would very likely choose Erudite.
"Heavy is the head that wears the crown,
Don't let the greatness get you down."
