Jane Austen's House

Chawton

We came to Chawton two days later than originally planned, because on the previous Saturday lath and plaster fell from the dining room ceiling! We had worried we wouldn't be able to visit at all, but fortunately the damage was not too extensive and the house was able to reopen by the Wednesday. Our Tuesday booking was able to be moved to Thursday (it was fully booked all morning - perhaps partly because this year marks the 250th anniversary of her birth).

It was warm all day but there were thundery showers as well as sunny spells.

Bus from Winchester to Alton and a short walk up to Chawton village. Beautiful thatched cottages, many with roses in their gardens.

Tea and cake in Cassandra's Cup before visiting Jane Austen's House. Then walked up to Chawton House for lunch and a look around the big house. The threat of thunder prevented us exploring the gardens but we did pause at St Nicholas's Church before retracing our steps for the bus back to Winchester.

Tapas for dinner at Bar Lento.
