Rhuddlan v. Denbigh A

MONDAY

I received a call from the first team captain this morning, asking if I could help out in this evening's re-arranged North Wales Coast League match against local rivals Denbigh A.

Storm Floris had arrived, but by the 6:00 p.m. start time, the 40+ mph winds had eased to around 20 mph. The wind had done a good job drying out the green and the bowls were flying.

We played in bright sunshine, and I was drawn to play at number six, which meant I was on the green by around 7:15 p.m.

As the evening went on, the sun dipped below the horizon, and by the time the last two players were on, it had become rather chilly. The green, which had been running quickly earlier, also started to slow down noticeably.

This was my first game in what is a tough league, and I was drawn against Oliver — one of Denbigh’s long-standing players. He remembered my late father-in-law, who captained their A team some 25 years ago.

After trailing 1–5 early on, I managed to level the score at 15 across and then pulled ahead to win 21–16. I was pleased with my bowling and the result. Unfortunately, the team didn’t fare so well — just 4 winners out of 10. A disappointing result at home.

A relatively busy week of bowls ahead.

Too wet and windy this morning to do much in the garden.

The photo was taken at 8:15 pm. The building behind the tree is the local police station.
