Hedge plants
My intention had been to come to the caravan last Friday, and to welcome my sister and brother in law here on Sunday as a stopover on their way up to Fort William. My heavy cold meant I stayed at home, fortunately I had given them a key when I last visited them in Dorset so they still had a couple of nights and avoided the worst of Storm Floris yesterday. I arrived at the caravan late afternoon today, a few hours after they had left.
This caravan is almost entirely encircled by big hedging, it’s very private. At the front the hedging must be at least 15 foot wide at its maximum, and whilst most of it has been cut to allow a view over it the men didn’t manage to get across to the caravan side. I quite like the idea of living in a woodland clearing, but once the developing hazel nuts have ripened I’ll ask for it to be pruned so I can see beyond :-)
Species wise much of the hedging is hazel and yew, but there’s also holly, hawthorn, spindle, guelder rose, ivy, honeysuckle and lots of bramble mixed in, with rowan, oak and silver birch trees on the edge. The earlier dogs rose mercury understory is now superseded by bracken, bramble (which keeps trying to get up through the decking), dog rose and other plants I really should try and identify.
It does feel like home.
