I’m a fan

It’s a day at sea, and it has to be said, it’s a bit choppy with some listing. Not that it bothers us, we quite like the movement.

Anyway, it’s a sea day as we continue our journey to Norway, and we are being ably entertained. Today’s blip is of a 15 minute vignette called ‘’Georgian Fantasy’ part of the Theatre at Sea’ programme.

Reading up on Georgian fan etiquette, it seems it was an important part of the upper classes in Georgian times.

Georgian fan etiquette involved a complex "fan language," where specific movements and positions of a hand fan conveyed secret messages, particularly for flirting, at social gatherings like balls and dinner parties.

For example, fanning slowly indicated a woman was married, while a rapid fan meant she was engaged.Tapping the right cheek with the fan signaled "yes," while the left cheek meant "no". Holding the fan open in the right hand in front of the face was a signal to "follow me," whereas in the left hand, it meant a desire for acquaintance.

Here’s hoping you are having a nice Friday.
