In-between the seconds

A Life in the Day of a Photographer – Monday

When I began writing this journal back in May, it was because my dear friend Jenny came over from Australia with her new husband for three weeks. Many of our mutual friends wanted to know what we were up to, who we were seeing, and how the reunion was going. Writing became the easiest way to share “what’s happening” with everyone.

And then it turned into something else.

When I tell people I’m a photographer, they often imagine my days are filled with glamorous shoots and constant camera clicks. The truth? Yes, I’m a full-time photographer—this is how I make my living—but so much of my work happens without a camera in hand. In fact, some days, like today, I don’t take a single photograph.

It’s Monday. I love Mondays. I even wrote last week about how much I love them. They feel like a fresh breath at the start of the week. This morning began with yoga instructions, then Pilates, followed by my weekly call with two wonderful friends where we set our intentions for the week. I finished a gallery for a client, put a handle on a door, chatted to the two cats you might have met yesterday, edited photographs from another wedding, wished my lovely client Christelle a happy birthday, and even dug through my archives to find photos of her to share for the occasion.

But I didn’t take a single new photo—not with my camera, not even with my phone.

So here I am tonight, sharing a favourite portrait of Christelle instead. Sometimes being a photographer is about creating new images… and sometimes it’s about everything else that surrounds them.
