Esrum Kloster (Abbey)

One of the largest monasteries in the Middle Ages, Esrum Abbey has been widely dismantled in the 16th Century Reformation.

The brick building in the picture has survived, King Christian III had it remodelled to serve as a hunting lodge. There are widespread forests nearby and around Esrum Sø (Lake).

The metallic rod scale model in the foreground of the main picture is meant to suggest an impression of the size of the abbey in the 12th to 16th centuries.

Nowadays the name Esrum (or Esrom) is widely known as applied to an aromatic cheese of strictly Danish origin.
