Median Wasp ( Dolichovespula media )
At least I think it is a median wasp. Using the University of Gloucestershire's website that is what I decided it was. As always if you know better please do tell me.
As I have said recently when I have a choice of blips I choose the least repeatable one. Clickychick and I were sat in the sun enjoying a pre-prandial sherry. I was taking shots of the masses of butterflies on the Buddleia nearby. We have a very useful fire pit, made in stainless steel it can be a fire pit, a BBQ or a coffee table. It was being used as a table and CC had splashed some of the sherry on to the cover. The wasp obviously thought it was it birthday.
I have noticed that this year the wasps seem smaller than those we usually see. I assume it is because they are Median wasps. These wasps only arrived in the UK in the 80s. Another reason I suspect it may be a median is they build their nests high and sometimes under the eaves of houses. We have had a nest in one of our House Martin nest boxes under the eaves
