HERON ON THE ROCK
A good day out today. I took Garron over to Kirkby Lonsdale. (The second k is not pronounced). We went early to have at least a couple of hours out before the heat of the day hit us.
We got there no problem and amazingly we could park in the Market Square - I can't remember the last time I managed to do that. Mind we were there by 9.30. We went into No.44 for coffee. Then had a walk through Main Street. Noted a new shop called Brockholes Blacknoses. Apparently it offers a unique selection of Valais Blacknose merchandise and apparetly is associated with Brockholes Farm Holiday Cottages, which also offers farm experiences with the Valais Blacknose sheep. This has nothing to do with Brockholes on Windermere which is completely separate. It doesn't open until 11 so may have to call in later.
We then walked through the chuchyard, I had a chat to a local man with is dog sitting in the lovely Remembrance Garden and then went on into The Gazebo ( a sort of tower) and then onto Ruskin's View. Only a small section of Ruskin's View is still open, it is still closed due to severe erosion and unstable conditions. There is a petition, which I've already signed and it is meant to be opening again but I don't know when.
After this we went into St Mary's Church for a rest and a look. Then on through the grounds down a ginnel (passageway) past The Old Weigh House (now up for sale) and The Old Market Cross. This cross is medieval structure located on Swinemarket, a cobbled square and was originally situated at a different junction in the town. It is a Grade II listed building and features an octagonal base with steps, and a crowning ball added in the 19th century.
Down here past the rather lovely Manor House on Mill Brow and onto the River Lune, which is uite low at the moment. However along the river we saw this gorgous heron just happily standing there not worried about people looking at it or anything.
We didn't got any further as that would have been too far Garron, as would The Radical Steps, so we went back up the hill (taking our time) and then into The Royal for lunch. It was OK but that's all, probably won't go again.
That is all for today, do take care and stay safe and I will see you all tomorrow.
