Saint Patrick and the Mountains of Mourne

We’re now in Northern Ireland, docked in Warrenpoint.

It’s been a fascinating day. We had a super local guide, Jackie, who gave us a really interesting insight into the recent history of the area, most specifically “The Troubles.”

She explained about the situation then and in the present day, ranging from the terrible Warrenpoint Massacre, from looking at tensions between the communities and then the progress so far. She’s local and gave her personal and diplomatically balanced perspective.

We passed through Newry and headed to the Saint Patrick Centre where we were able to learn more about Ireland’s Patron Saint. A fascinating and moving view of his life and his importance, from the director of the centre - an academic and religious specialist.

Throughout we were treated to the wonderful Irish sense of humour, on such a range of subjects.

On to Saul, the location of Saint Patrick’s first church and then to Down Cathedral (my blip) and St Patrick’s grave.

I’ve learned so much, remembered so much, and it’s been a day for insights and thought.

Extras - local Irish dancers and a shot of part of the film in the centre.

After that, a lovely drive to Newcastle, a popular seaside town, where we could appreciate the Mountains of Mourne……

And tomorrow - Belfast.
