World Tour of Kent Day 2
A much more chilled day today, Blippo & Pinky Stapleton were mostly in the back seat wearing dark glasses after all the excitement yesterday. We drove east to Reculver where these two towers are all that remain of a 12th Century church that was still in use as a parish church until 1805 when coastal erosion aided the decision to rebuild the church elsewhere, using most of the stone from the original. The towers were preserved as a local maritime navigational feature.
A good clear day and was able to get a long-shot of some offshore wind turbines. (extra)
Close by is Thanet Earth, a massive private glasshouse complex estimated to produce around 400 million tomatoes, 33 million cucumbers and 20 million peppers each year. Visitors are not allowed in but we drove around the perimeter and can confirn that it is HUGE. A tall hedge all round prevents any worthwhile photography but it's easy to find on satellite maps if you want to see for yourselves.
After that we called in at the Wantsum Brewery Tap, a place I've wanted to visit for several years, if only for its name. It sits on the river Wantsum, which, once upon a time, separated the Isle of Thanet from mainland Britain. Blippo and Pinky Stapleton were a little more engaged at this pint.
