Greenfinch Red Haws

I heard a commotion in the hawthorn hedge opposite my mother's house. There were lots of birds hidden amongst the foliage. It was a while before this one showed itself. It's a female greenfinch catching the evening sunlight. The flock was obviously attracted by the ripening haws. Shame it's not a hawfinch, I've never seen one.

My granny used to water her tomato seedlings with a Haws watering can. It had a brass medallion fixed to the top with a spray of hawthorn berries. These are considered the Rolls Royce of watering cans to this day.

Ripening haws, another sign that the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us.
