I couldn’t not go
Again. I sat in my kitchen trying to make decision, as I had a really busy day planned getting ready for a trip away. But in the end I felt I had to go. While these far right individuals keep showing up in my city, we have to turn out and peacefully disagree with them.
I could have shown you photos of a man doing a Nazi salute, or people who were ugly on the outside as well as the inside laughing and jeering at us. Of the police - officers and horses - shoving us backwards aggressively, (which frightened me a little as I thought I would fall), in order to enable a tiny group march their hate around the shopping centre. Or 4 officers sitting and kneeling on a small protester, who had blood pouring from his or her forehead. Haven’t they heard of George Floyd? (In a while I saw the same person sitting up, gasping for air, but able to speak, with a legal observer helping them.) Or I could have shown the police escorting the far right straight through the other demonstration, against genocide in Gaza, taking place in the shopping centre. As one of the demonstrators next to me said, they’re getting a first class service from the police today.
I don’t know if the police made a huge mistake, or if it was deliberate, but as they accompanied the ‘deport migrants’ people, the little but aggressive group were intimidating and sneering at the peaceful protesters. I managed to speak to one and asked him why he was there - he said he “wanted his country back “. I didn’t get a chance to ask him who he thought had his country. But it certainly isn’t asylum seekers.
It was so friendly, within the huge group who were there to oppose the far right. I was there by myself, and must have chatted with at least 30 people of all ages and communities, men and women.
So here are two peaceful nice women who hate racism holding up placards that say it so well.
So much for going down just for a short time, I was there for over 5 hours. I didn’t feel I could leave until the far right people went away.
