Sussex not quite by the sea

Three trains from Bristol to Lewes - the first packed with people going to the Reading festival and the Notting Hill carnival, the next full of people with large suitcases going to Gatwick, and the third full of people in posh frocks and dinner jackets with wicker picnic hampers going to the opera at Glyndebourne. I was lucky to get a seat in all three.
Staying for a few days with my best friend J in Ringmer near Lewes. After a catch up and a sit in her garden we went for a walk in the countryside opposite her house, mainly used for growing sweet corn this year as you see.  Lovely big skies here, the ground is dusty and full of cracks.
Wherever we walked she said - property developers have permission to build a housing estate on this field. I couldn’t quite figure out whether it was 3 or 4 places she meant. The local council oppose, but have no power in the situation. I think she hovers between despair and resignation. We walked through some of the new estates that have been built recently, they’re all 4 bedroom detached ‘executive’ houses.  The ones that make the developers the most money I suppose….
In the evening my friend’s stepson and his boyfriend were here to eat and after we played a brilliant game I hadn’t seen before, called Hitster, where snatches of pop tunes are played and you have to guess, or remember(!), the year artists and title. I’m pleased to say that the over 70s won against the 30somethings! I suppose we had more decades to work with, though definitely less sharp memories:)
