Come into the Garden

Ears

I hear as if I had very big ears indeed.

I hear everything like that. Magnified. A hundred times. A hundred hundred times.

That's why the Hoover is a vicious monster and why the slightest pin drop in another room tells me there is an intruder.

I am alert to all the possibilities (unless I am asleep.) Or unless I am doing something more interesting like scratching, playing or diving bombing birds.

It is sunny but I am working so I can finish on Thursday... and get myself ready to be gone on that there holiday Friday, late...

I know this shot is not perfect but it's perfect to me because Maud 's ears are doing this funny bunting thing which I consider a particular gift of hers.

I heard, as if I had no Ear by Emily Dickinson

I heard, as if I had no Ear
Until a Vital Word
Came all the way from Life to me
And then I knew I heard.

I saw, as if my Eye were on
Another, till a Thing
And now I know 'twas Light, because
It fitted them, came in.

I dwelt, as if Myself, were out,
My Body but within
Until a Might detected me
And set my kernel in.

And Spirit turned unto the Dust
"Old Friend, thou knowest me,"
And Time went out to tell the News
And met Eternity.
