So. Here We Are

Miner's Beach, East End

Should have been at partially sunny today, at least that was the forecast when I booked a boat ride to Pictured Rocks. But it was not to be. The day started out overcast, by early afternoon the drizzle had moved in and by the time the boat tour began it was foggy.

Still, we Brits don't let a bit of drizzle get us down! I had a wonderful morning on the west end of Miner's Beach exploring the mouth of the Miner's River as it emptied into Lake Superior. A cup of coffee in Munising, then it was back to wander along the beginning stretch of the North Country Trail and back along the west portion of the beach. Got a few raindrops on the lens, it was inevitable.

Once upon a time I would have insisted on kayaking the sandstone cliffs, which are only really accessible by water, but these days I don't really trust my shoulders, so I booked a boat ride. But before that, lunch! Turns out that the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is the place to buy Cornish Pasties in the US - it's a tradition, brought by immigrant miners, presumably from Cornwall, but also happily embraced d by the Finns who made their homes here (lots of Finnish flags in evidence). Don't tell them in Cornwall, but I was informed that pasties are definitely Finnish in origin, (pasty being obviously a Finnish word - OK, I didn't say that). Anyway I ate one, not really Mr So's cup of tea, so I got the whole thing. As a true American he wanted dipping sauce, aka gravy, which we didn't know we could have asked for.
