On the Shores of Gitche Gumee
I didn't realise it at the time, but Longfellow set his epic poem Hiawatha in the Pictured Rocks area of Michigan, which explains why the Hiawatha National Forest is there. Gitche Gumee, or Gichi-gami as the Ojibwe call it, is, of course what we call Lake Superior. It means 'Great Sea'.
