The Watercress Line
The day started with a clear blue sky. I was up and ready early, and headed into nearby Winchester for breakfast - a croissant and coffee. Early morning joggers were out in force. I decided to explore south of the city centre, heading along the River Itchen, visiting Wolvesley Castle, seeing the extensive water meadows and lands occupied by Winchester College. The sky was getting very interesting as I returned and approached the cathedral, the weather was changing (extra). I headed in to light a candle and explore.
I then travelled out of Winchester to nearby Alresford, visiting niece E, her partner J and lively five year old E. Lots of chat, and a walk from their home through the centre to Alresford Station on the Watercress Line (there are farmed watercress meadows around Alresford, historically it used to be sent fresh on this line direct to London before Dr Beeching and a move to road transport changed everything ). Exciting to see a steam train turn up. A good lunch at a place close to the station.
Random extra - a silver plaque on the public toilets. Google to find the details.
Finally a return to Winchester, where I met Miranda1008 for a coffee and a good chat (good to meet up Miranda). Then, in pouring rain, I headed into the cathedral again for a mooch around and choral evensong. Extra - I love the Anthony Gormley sculpture (Sound II) in the crypt.
