Mary Ann Nichols JTRs 1st Victim

Although their had been two earlier Murders in Whitechapel that may or may not have been killed by Jack the Ripper with the violent deaths of Emma Smith & Martha Tabram were never trully attributed to Jack, however on this Early morning of Aug 1st 1888 Mary Ann Nichols had been drinking in the Frying Pan Pub on the corner of Brick Lane & Thrawl St from which Nichols was reported to have been seen emerging from that pub on the morning of her death.
At approximately 3:40am
Charles Cross was walking along Brady St on the North side of Bucks Row on his way to work in the pre-dawn gloom he noticed what looked like a tarpaulin that may have been useful to him at the gates of Browns stable yard as he crossed the road he heard footsteps of another man & waited for him to get nearer then said come over here & look there's a woman they looked Startled & a little wary as this second man Robert Paul joined Cross to have a brief examination of the body.
The woman was on her back with her skirt up & bonnet lying close by.
Cross touched the hands they were cold & limp, I believe she's dead said Cross touching her her face he though she may be still breathing their was little more other than rearranging Mary's skirt by pulling it back down for her dignity they looked for a Police officer.
PC John Neil 975J patrolling his beat as he entered Bucks Row discovered Mary whilst Cross & Paul were still searching for a  Police Officer & Neil noticed  what Cross & Paul never saw at the time  was the blood oozing from Mary's neck. Also PC Jack Thain 96J arrived on scene PC Neil said for God's sake Jack go fetch a Dr, Cross & Paul found another officer PC Jonas Mizen 56H by then the Dr Rees Llewellyn had arrived  from his surgery at152 Whitchapel Rd almost on the corner with Brady St would arrive at the scene of Mary's death as his surgery was only some 300 yards away from the Grizzly scene.
Mary's body would be taken by Ambulance which in reality was a cart to the Workhouse Mortuary just off Old Montague St to be examined later.
