Curious

Notwithstanding my feelings about the trees they are felling in in the park, it does give me something else to look at and to be curious about.

As the son of a woodworker I feel I should know why the stump of this tree reveals two very different shades of wood, but I don’t. Is this typical? Is this diseased?  And if I was my Dad I might be looking at the pattern on the felled tree (extra) and thinking about what interesting effects might come from working with two toned, somewhat differently grained wood. 

To be be fair to him, he didn’t go round chopping down trees to supply the needs of himself and his pupils, but reclaimed and salvaged wherever he could. You can make a lot of interesting things out of church and chapel pews.
