Avro Vulcan B.2 XJ823
Back in the day this bomber kept things during the ‘Cold War’ at bay. Much has changed. This one has been on display at the Solway Aviation Museum near Carlisle since 1983.
This volunteer run museum has about 20 planes and well worth a visit. My highlight was climbing up into the Vulcan bomber and seeing where the 5 man crew worked. They also had the nose section of a Hawker Siddeley Trident that was built in my hometown when I was just 5 years old. I remember seeing the planes flying overhead when they were being tested.
Later we stopped at Lanercost Priory for lunch and then onto Birdoswold Roman Fort where we saw some of Hadrian’s Wall, a even much earlier form of conflict prevention…
