NHM: "Abstract with Machinery"

I always find these screw-presses and their massive precision-engineered screws rather satisfying: these are used by plant mounters to apply massive and even pressure to the specimens as they are stuck to the herbarium sheet.
The mounters use gummed tape to attach the stems to the sheet, and archival glues to ensure that the leaves (and any flowers or fruit in spermatophytes) remain firmly attached to the sheet. It is amazing how much thought has gone into the process: for example, many types of glue have been tested long term to ensure that the glues used are the ones that have the least impact on the specimens, and stand the test of time without discolouring or breaking down.

Anyway, that is my backward-engineered justification for composing an abstract homage to the satisfying screw...

Boo, no news on the Goosle front :-(
