Johansen Bay, Dundas Harbour, Devon Island, Canada

From Pond Inlet we crossed Lancaster Sound to Devon Island – the largest unpopulated island in the world. It has in the past been populated by both Inuit and by representatives of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

This picturesque spot at Johansen Bay was where lucky Mounties got posted for up to two years at a time – the last time this happened was in the early 1950s. A little graveyard behind the huts is a reminder that not every Mounty completed the posting.
