St Kilda II

Well I wasn’t going to come all the way to the Outer Hebrides and only plan one trip to St Kilda. On a previous trip to the Hebrides I tried to get to St Kilda, but got weathered off, so this time I’d given myself lots of chances to get to the islands.

The second day was a repeat of yesterday but with a different boat (again from Kilda Cruises) and different weather.

When the islands were evacuated in 1930 the place was abandoned and the houses along The Street were just left to slowly disintegrate.

The National Trust for Scotland eventually took over ownership of the islands, and they have now made six of the houses along The Street habitable. These are used to provide accommodation for visiting researchers and the volunteers who help maintain the place, and to house a lovely little museum.

If you get a chance to go to St Kilda do, it is a fantastic place.
