Tasilaq panorama - East Greenland

This is Tasilaq on the island of Angmagssalik. It is the largest town in Eastern Greenland with nearly 2000 inhabitants. It is situated on the banks of an internal lake that has a small channel to the sea and has a natural harbour that has been built up into a quay. Whilst the accommodation is mostly in tiny, pretty coloured cabins perched on the rock, these have the benefits of double glazing, concrete foundations, running water, TV and internet and power from the micro geothermal powerstation.

Apart from that they are cut-off for most of the year. Ships can only get into the harbour for a few months in the year and the link to the airport in Kulusuk 15 km away is by an ageing 9 seater Bell 212 twin huey helicopter. But during the winter the locals can hitch up their dog-sleds or skidoos and travel for miles up the frozen fjords.

Definitely best seen in LARGE
