Moret-sur-Loing

It was a lovely evening, so when Roger got back from work we decided to drive out to the delightful medieval town of Moret sur Loing to eat. Moret's picturesque setting on the River Loing, a little way upstream from where it joins the Seine, made it a popular subject for several of the Impressionist painters, especially Alfred Sisley who made it his home from 1889 until his death in 1899. (If you scroll down to the bottom of the link, the lowest four paintings are of Moret) A friend of Monet, Manet, Renoir and Pissarro in particular, Sisley had a difficult life and his work only gained real recognition after his death. We had a short walk around the town in the evening sun then found a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river. My photograph shows the Porte de Samois, originally named Porte de Paris, which commands access to the old town from the west. You can expect to see several more shots from Moret in the months to come!
