Autumnal

The main news here has been the death of the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki.

His life story is definitely worth a read.

My favourite story about him is when he was given a Lifetime Award at a tv awards ceremony in 2008. He refused to accept it and followed it up by saying that most of German television was rubbish. He had/has a point.

One of the more famous quotes from him came when he was asked whether he believed in God, he answered: "I believe in Shakespeare and Goethe, in Mozart and Beethoven".

The Süddeutsche Zeitung called him "Der Mann, der uns das Lesen lehrte" (the man who taught us how to read). Which I think is a pretty good way to be remembered.

In my life nothing much happened other than work.
