Apple Day

One of our local farms held an apple day today. They had some 30 or 40 different varieties of eating apples on display, along with another 10 or so varieties of cooking apples. You could fill a large bag for £1 (so we did)!

There was also home made honey on sale for £3, plus apple pies, cakes, sausages etc etc.

Lovely stuff!

The eating apples are mostly old varieties that we had never heard of before. The local orchards are very old and no longer commercially viable to run, but the farmers keep them alive for the wildlife, if nothing else.

We have our own apple trees in the garden, but it is nice to go and try other varieties, that you simply will never see or taste in the shops.
